Why Wednesday? The Story Behind Our Name

A little pause in the middle of the week.

Why Wednesday?

It’s a question we get from time to time.

Wednesday sits right in the middle of the week. Monday has passed, but the weekend still feels a little far away. It is an ordinary day — and perhaps that is exactly why we like it.

In the middle of busy work and everyday routines, we all need a little space to pause, recharge and find our rhythm again.

That simple thought became part of the idea behind Oh Wednesday.

We wanted to create a place where you might discover something unexpected, find an object that makes you smile, encounter the work of an artist you have never seen before, or simply spend a little time surrounded by creativity.

A small moment of delight in an otherwise ordinary week.

From an idea to a physical space

Oh Wednesday eventually found its home on Jalan Sultan, in Kuala Lumpur’s historic city centre.

Our beginning was modest: a small independent store bringing together illustrations, handmade objects, character designs and other works by independent creators.

But there was also a very practical idea behind the store.

For many independent creators, markets and pop-ups are an important way to meet people and sell their work. Yet these opportunities are temporary. They happen on particular weekends, in particular venues, and are affected by everything from weather and foot traffic to the size of a booth.

We wondered: what happens between those market days?

Could there be a more permanent place where creative work continues to be seen, discovered and supported?

That question became another part of Oh Wednesday.

More than filling shelves

Over time, the store has grown — not only physically, but also in the number of creative voices we encounter.

We have met illustrators, makers, character designers and independent creative brands through markets, introductions, conversations and sometimes simple chance encounters.

For us, curation has never meant filling every available shelf.

We are interested in work with personality, originality and a point of view. We want different creative voices to sit alongside one another while still retaining what makes each of them distinct.

And increasingly, we have been thinking about what can happen beyond the shelf.

Can a creator’s work become part of a collaboration? Can an original character find a new audience? Can an idea move from retail into a project, an event, licensing, merchandise or another commercial opportunity?

We don’t have all the answers yet.

Oh Wednesday is still growing and learning.

But perhaps that is also what Wednesday represents for us: not the beginning, and not the destination, but somewhere in the middle — a place to pause, discover something new, and keep going.

A little midweek joy.
